Kapelle hl. Markus in Stubenbach

The Markuskapelle is a small wayside chapel in the Stubenbach district of Lech, a village in Vorarlberg’s Bludenz district. Built in the 17th century, it is dedicated to Saint Mark and protected as a listed monument. The chapel stands at the edge of Lech, just beyond the stream that separates it from the road to Warth. Its simple stone walls enclose a rectangular room topped by a steep pitched roof. Four round panes of bull’s-eye glass let in light, and inside a wooden coffered ceiling from the building’s first years remains intact. The altar, with its twisted columns, dates from the same period, while the carved figures were added decades later. The altar shows a finely carved Madonna and Child flanked by statues of Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Theodul. The Stations of the Cross are painted wooden panels made by local craftsmen early in the 19th century. The quiet spot beside the stream offers a pause from the mountain road and a glimpse of rural devotion from the Baroque age.
