Salober

The Zwölferkopf, also called Salober, is a mountain rising to 1 293 m in the Falkensteinkamm range of the Allgäuer Alps. It stands near the Bavarian–Tyrolean border between Pfronten and Vils, with the Weissensee lake to its north-east. The summit is the highest point of the whole Falkensteinkamm. The name Zwölfer refers to its noon-time alignment with the hamlets of Rossmoos or Wiedmar. The Salober name appears on Bavarian maps, while Austrian maps call the same height the Zwölferkopf fifty metres further west. A century ago Austrian maps placed the Salober name on a lower ridge to the west. The Saloberalpe pasture lies east of the summit on the Austrian side. The easiest route climbs from the ruins of Falkenstein castle to Alatsee lake and makes a short detour to the top. This section forms part of the Via Alpina’s violet route from Slovenia to Vorarlberg. Walkers can also start from Vils via the Saloberalm or take the forest track north from Rossmoos.
