Schloss Haslangkreit

Schloss Haslangkreit stands in the Schwaben region near Kühbach. It began as a medieval water castle called Burg Gereut in 1285. The Haslang family took possession around 1300 and held it for nearly five centuries. In the 17th century they turned it into a grand four-winged structure with an arcaded courtyard. By 1675–80 the building had been reshaped in the Baroque style, giving it curved gables, a domed gatehouse and a chapel dedicated to St George. The Haslang family rose to noble rank in the 17th and 18th centuries. After the last count died in 1804, the estate passed to the von Maldeghem family in 1840. They never lived there. In 1972 the Rössig family bought the castle and two hectares of land. Over time parts of the complex were demolished, leaving only three wings and a park-facing courtyard. The remaining Baroque façade shows rusticated corners, pilasters and cornices. The gate now has fluted columns and an openwork pediment. Inside the chapel, the bell turret on the east wing wears a small dome. The park, once surrounded by water-filled moats, still opens towards the surviving wings. Though the castle itself is closed to the public, its refined exterior and landscaped grounds remain visible from outside.
