Schloss Haldem stands on the southern slope of the Stemweder Berg in the village of Haldem, part of the Stemwede municipality in Minden-Lübbecke district. First recorded in 1236, it began as a knightly estate held by the Bishops of Minden. The von der Horst family acquired it in the 14th century and rebuilt the castle after its destruction in the Thirty Years’ War. In 1775 the Prussian minister Freiherr von der Horst expanded the building further.

The castle’s history includes periods as a ladies’ foundation and later a Hitler Youth leadership school during the 1930s and 1940s. After the Second World War it became a British-occupied site, then a teacher training college and finally a school camp. Since 1959 it has housed a clinic for addicts and mentally ill offenders under Westphalian law.

Visitors can walk through the remaining Baroque core of the castle and the modern clinic grounds. The once-extensive park has been reshaped by later landscaping, but the setting on the hillside still offers views across the surrounding countryside. Occasional open days in June and November allow limited access to parts of the estate.

Opening hours and admission can change with the season. Check before you go: stemwede.de
