ADC Theatre

The ADC Theatre is a small producing theatre in Cambridge, run by the university’s Amateur Dramatic Club. It stands on Park Street, just off Jesus Lane, and is Britain’s oldest university playhouse. The building belongs to a trust but is leased to the university, with six staff keeping it running. It has a single auditorium seating up to 228, though shows usually use fewer seats. A lift gives step-free access from the street to the bar and auditorium. The theatre’s safety curtain rises from the floor, unlike the usual falling type. The theatre has launched many careers. Famous actors and comedians appeared there early on, including Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Tilda Swinton. Directors like Sir Peter Hall and Sir Trevor Nunn also gained experience in its early days. The building was rebuilt after a 1933 fire and again in 2002–2008, adding lifts, a new foyer and improved backstage rooms. A 2018 renovation renewed the roof, seating and lighting rigs. Visitors find a compact but lively space. Two shows often run each night during term time, with a late slot starting at 11 pm. The bar serves themed cocktails tied to the week’s production. Outside term time the theatre hosts fewer shows, allowing maintenance work. New students can take part in the Freshers Plays in Michaelmas Term. The theatre remains a busy hub for student drama and visiting companies.
