Burgruine
The Burgruine Schönarts stands on a narrow ridge about 194 metres above the valley, west of the hamlet of Schönarts in Main-Spessart. Built in 1268 by the lords of Henneberg, it was meant to guard the approach to Karlstadt. Bishop Iring of Würzburg stopped the work at once and ordered the half-built walls torn down, fearing the fortress would weaken his diocese’s hold on the region. Few traces remain, yet the ruins still show part of the outer curtain wall and the foundations of the keep. A wide ditch cut into the slope marks where the moat once ran. Visitors walk over grassy mounds that rise above the surrounding meadows, following faint lines of stone that once held the towers. The site overlooks rolling farmland and distant wooded hills. A short climb brings one to the highest point, where only a low stump of wall survives. From here the valley stretches away, silent except for the wind in the grass and the occasional call of a bird. The place feels remote, its broken walls speaking of a brief moment in the 13th century when power was carved in stone.
