Diocese of Wrexham

The Diocese of Wrexham is a Catholic diocese in north-east Wales, covering six ancient counties from Anglesey to Montgomeryshire. Its see is at the Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Wrexham. The diocese was created in 1987 from the former Diocese of Menevia, which itself had taken shape in 1898 from the Apostolic Vicariate of Wales. The diocese is one of four in Wales and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia. The current bishop is Peter Brignall, who was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Before 1916 the area belonged to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury. Four deaneries organise its churches under local deans. Visitors find a modern cathedral in Wrexham serving as the diocesan seat. Four deaneries—Ss Asaph and Tudno, Ss Beuno and Garmon, St Mary, and St Winefride—link parishes across the region. Nearby sites include St Winefride’s Well and St Beuno’s Jesuit Spirituality Centre, both important to local Catholic life.
