Bayrhamerplatz 8, Hallein

The house at Bayrhamerplatz 8 in Hallein is a 16th-century town house standing on the square of the same name in the Salzburg district of Hallein. Its walls still carry the weight of centuries, and the building is officially listed as a historic monument. The structure forms part of an ensemble built in the Inn-Salzach style, a regional tradition that shapes the look of the entire square. Inside, visitors find traces of craftsmanship from the Renaissance. A carved wooden beam in the first-floor ceiling bears the date 1527 and the monogram IHS, while the same ceiling shows a protective pentagram cut into the wood. Three fireplaces survive, their flues still usable, and the main entrance is framed by a round arch of Adneter marble. Outside, the façade rises four storeys in five bays, topped by a curved Baroque gable that steps back twice. The ground floor now houses a small gallery called 1Blick, which has shown changing exhibitions of fine art every month since 1992. Above, on the roof ridge behind the gable, a wooden sculpture appears in rotation since 2003. The square outside remains a quiet spot where the house’s carved details and historic materials can be seen at close hand.
