Forss Water

Forss Water rises at the northern end of Loch Shurrey in the Highland council area. After leaving the loch it flows north for about thirteen kilometres before reaching Crosskirk Bay and the Atlantic. The river marks the eastern edge of the Clan Mackay raid in the Sandside Chase of 1437. Five streams feed the river. Alt Torigil joins near Broubster, Alltan Guinne enters further upstream, and the Burn of Baillie and Burn of Brimside arrive closer to the source. Four road bridges and one footbridge cross the water, including the Bridge of Forss on the A836. The footbridge at the river’s mouth links Crosskirk on the east bank with St Mary’s Chapel on the west. Walkers can follow the river from its quiet loch beginnings down to the wide sandy bay where it meets the sea.
