Burg Vogtsberg
The Burg Vogtsberg stands on a low hill above the Thierbach stream between Acholshausen and Gaukönigshofen in Lower Franconia. It was first built as a refuge fort in the early Middle Ages and later enlarged into a proper castle with stone walls and towers. By the 16th century it had become a small medieval stronghold owned by local knights. In 1525 the castle was burned and dismantled during the Peasants’ War. Today only the wide, grass-covered ditch that once surrounded the walls remains visible. The site is recognised as an archaeological monument and is kept clear of modern buildings. Visitors walk across open meadows where the foundations once carried halls and stables. A single information board explains the castle’s three main phases: refuge fort, medieval castle, ruined stronghold. From the top of the hill there are wide views over the Thierbach valley and the surrounding villages. The Burgstall is reached by a short farm track from Acholshausen. The ground is firm underfoot and suitable for families with children. In spring the meadow is dotted with wild flowers and the air smells of fresh grass. The quiet spot is often empty except for occasional ramblers and dog walkers. It offers a clear picture of how small medieval castles once looked before they were abandoned or rebuilt.
