Wölanburg

The Wölanburg is an old earthwork fort in Harsewinkel, a town in the Gütersloh district of North Rhine-Westphalia. It once covered four acres and stretched about one kilometre southwest from the judge’s farm. The site sits between the Abrocksbach stream to the north and west, the Ems river lowlands to the south, and the Lutter stream to the east. Archaeologists dated the fort to the 9th century, though the first written record appears in a monastery inventory from 1198. Excavations led by Anton Dom in 1954 confirmed the site’s military use. By 1957 the remaining ramparts had been levelled, leaving only traces in the landscape. Visitors today see a quiet field where the old walls once stood. The flat ground shows little sign of the fort, yet the setting along the Ems valley remains peaceful. Nearby farms and the gentle streams recall the land’s past. The spot offers a place to walk and imagine the 9th-century builders who once defended this spot.
