Schloss Rossatz

Schloss Rossatz is a Renaissance building in the village of Rossatz-Arnsdorf in the Krems district of Lower Austria. It stands on the village’s church square, surrounded by other old structures. The palace is protected as a listed monument. The castle passed through many hands over the centuries. It began as a Babenberg possession in the 11th century, then belonged to the Kuenrings, the Walsees, the Spaurs and others. In 1768 the Schönborn-Buchheims united it with their estate at Mautern. Since 1859 the local farming and forest co-operative has owned the site. A major restoration in 1989 returned its Renaissance appearance. The two-storey, two-wing palace encloses a triangular courtyard. The north wing still shows three levels of arcades with different arches. The main block carries a painted sundial dated 1600 on its inner face. The street front bears the date 1582 and fragments of sgraffito decoration. The medieval core was largely rebuilt in the late 16th century.
