Kath. Filialkirche hl. Katharina und Friedhof Karl

The Catholic branch church of St Catherine and its graveyard stand in the village of Karl in Draßmarkt, Burgenland. The single-naved church with its stone tower occupies a quiet spot beside the cemetery. Both church and graveyard have been protected as monuments since the 20th century. The church first appears in a 1647 visitation report naming its patron saint and the local lord, Count Franz Nádasdy. In 1723 the Pressburg canon Matthias Mack enlarged the building, and in 1760 a stone tower with a brick helmet replaced the old wooden one. Wartime losses in 1945 were made good by two new bells in 1952, and the tower’s metalwork was renewed. Inside, the flat-ceilinged nave leads to a vaulted choir. The stone pulpit and two stone holy-water stoups survive from the 18th century. The high altar shows a painting of St Catherine flanked by baroque statues of Sts Oswald and Wendelin, while the side altar of 1832 carries an image of St Veronika. Outside, a 1924 war memorial was extended after 1945 with names of the fallen.
