Charlton House

Charlton House stands on elevated ground in Charlton, part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. This Jacobean mansion was built between 1607 and 1612 for Sir Adam Newton, tutor to Prince Henry, eldest son of King James I. Designed in an H-plan with red brick and stone dressings, it remains one of England’s finest and best-preserved examples of Jacobean domestic architecture. The interior features oak staircases, panelled rooms, ornamental plasterwork ceilings and elaborate chimney pieces. Royal connections appear in decorative elements such as the Prince of Wales’s feathers and the royal Stuart coat of arms. Nikolaus Pevsner praised its interior as containing the most exuberant decoration of any Jacobean house. The house reflects a transitional moment in English architecture, blending Tudor sprawl with emerging Renaissance symmetry. Its garden house or orangery in the northwest corner has been attributed to Inigo Jones on stylistic grounds. John Evelyn once described the view from the house as one of the most noble in the world, taking in city, river, ships, meadows, hills and woods. A mulberry tree planted in 1608, now a Great Tree of London, recalls James I’s failed attempt to establish a silk industry. The estate passed through generations of owners, including Sir Henry Newton, a Royalist who fled during the English Civil War. Visitors find the principal rooms open to the public when not in use for events. The walled gardens and perennial borders were redesigned by landscape designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin, retaining ancient Prunus trees and including an Amnesty International Peace Garden. Remnants of the original pleasure grounds survive in Charlton Park, and the isolated gateway to the estate now stands on the front lawn. The house serves as a community centre and events venue, managed by the Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust.
