Cultural heritage D-2-7337-0086 in Pfeffenhausen

Schloss Pfaffendorf was a medieval and early modern seat of nobility in Pfaffendorf, now a village within the market town of Pfeffenhausen in Lower Bavaria. It stood just south of the parish church of Mariä Opferung, beside the Große Laber river. The site appears on the 1830 Bavarian land register as a long main building with a second wing set at a right angle. Today only these two structures remain, though it is uncertain whether they preserve original fabric. A short distance to the south-east the ground slopes down to the river, where a protected 19th-century farmstead stands. The complex is registered as a scheduled monument because it contains traces of earlier phases and vanished parts of the castle or noble residence. Beneath the present buildings lie remains of predecessor constructions from the Middle Ages and early modern period. Archaeologists have identified these buried features under the reference D-2-7337-0086. The surviving wings themselves are the only visible evidence of what once occupied the site. Visitors see two modest stone wings standing close to the church and river. The southern slope towards the Große Laber offers a quiet walk along its banks. The neighbouring farm, Pfaffendorf 2 and 2a, adds a slice of 19th-century rural architecture to the scene. The church tower nearby marks the centre of the small village community. The whole setting conveys a quiet sense of former power now reduced to a handful of walls and memories.
