Codford Circle

Codford Circle stands on Codford Hill, a chalk promontory of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. The hill rises above the village of Codford, offering wide views across the surrounding countryside. This oval-shaped earthwork is known by several names, including Wilsbury Ring and Woldsbury. It covers about 3.6 hectares and is surrounded by a bank up to 1.6 metres high and a ditch up to 0.5 metres deep. Aerial photographs reveal traces of an inner ditch and possible former palisade lines, with entrances on the east and west sides. The site has no clear signs of permanent occupation, and its defences appear weak compared to later hillforts. Archaeologists believe it dates from an early period but its exact purpose remains uncertain. The earthworks show signs of later modifications, including additional entrances added in different centuries. The slight nature of the defences suggests it may have served as a gathering place rather than a fortified stronghold. Its age and function continue to puzzle experts. Visitors reach the site by walking up Codford Hill from the nearby village. The grassy bank and ditch are still visible, though parts have been worn down by ploughing. The summit offers long views over the plain, taking in fields and distant landmarks. The site is quiet, with few visitors, making it a place for peaceful reflection. The lack of modern intrusions adds to its sense of ancient mystery.
