St Andrew's Church

St Andrew’s stands in Handsworth, a district of Birmingham, as a Grade I listed parish church of the Church of England. It began in 1894 as a mission church of the Good Shepherd in a temporary building. The present church was designed by William Bidlake in the Arts and Crafts style. Construction started in 1907 and finished the following year. Dedication came in 1910, and consecration followed in 1914 when a separate parish was created from St Mary’s and St James’. The church is recognised for its two-manual pipe organ by William Bird and Sons of Selly Park. A robed parish choir leads the main Sunday service at ten o’clock. The choir draws members across all ages and uses the SATB arrangement. They perform traditional, classical and modern works each week. A new anthem is chosen to fit the liturgy every Sunday. Inside, the Arts and Crafts interior includes fine woodwork and stained glass. The organ case and choir stalls show Bidlake’s careful detailing. The nave opens to a simple yet dignified space for worship. Outside, Handsworth’s streets frame the church with a mix of terraces and parks. The building remains a quiet centre in a busy part of the city.
