Villa Schmederer
Villa Schmederer stands in Salzburg’s Parsch district on the Kreuzbergpromenade. Built between 1887 and 1889 for brewer Ludwig Schmederer, it is a large Neorenaissance villa designed by Josef Wessicken. The house replaced an earlier apothecary’s estate and sits on a sloping site with a carefully planned garden. Outbuildings included a gardener’s house, chapel, stables, a small power plant and even a bowling alley. The villa’s tower and richly decorated façades show the ambitions of Salzburg’s late-19th-century upper class. Schmederer, later an honorary citizen of Salzburg, lived here for nearly forty-five years. After his death the villa became a meeting place for artists and hosted a ballet school run by Friderica Derra de Moroda. In 1983 Luciano Pavarotti filmed Christmas puppet sequences inside for a European television special. The building also served as a venue for the Salzburg Festival and later housed international associations before a full renovation in 2002. Inside, the villa follows classical Munich craftsmanship with marble floors, bronze statuettes and carved wooden ceilings. The piano nobile has tall rectangular windows framed by architraves, while the north façade features a three-storey tower and a wrought-iron balcony. The garden terraces and surrounding walls remain part of the protected monument, offering quiet views over the neighbourhood’s tree-lined streets.
