Benburb Castle

Benburb Castle stands on a limestone cliff above the River Blackwater, which marks the border between County Tyrone and County Armagh in Northern Ireland. A 19th-century tower house forms part of the restored ruins, set within the grounds of the Servite Priory. The priory itself is a large and imposing building belonging to the Servite religious order. The castle is recognised as a State Care Historic Monument in the care of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council. Its position on the riverbank gives it a commanding view over the surrounding countryside. The bawn, or defensive wall, still encloses the tower house and part of the priory grounds. Visitors find the tower house and its stone walls standing near the priory’s entrance. The river below flows past steep banks lined with trees. The priory’s buildings add a quiet, reflective atmosphere to the site. The contrast between the old castle and the newer priory creates a striking scene.
