Abergavenny Museum

Abergavenny Museum sits on the high point of the old castle motte in the town centre of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire. The building was once the hunting lodge of the Marquess of Abergavenny, constructed in 1819 on the site of the castle keep. Below, the River Usk winds through Castle Meadows, and the grounds offer views over the surrounding landscape. The museum occupies the square keep of the castle, a prominent feature of the town’s skyline. Its location links the modern town with centuries of history. The museum began in the late 1950s when local residents saved artefacts uncovered during redevelopment. Volunteers established the museum to preserve finds from the Roman fort of Gobannium and earlier periods. The collection includes Mesolithic tools, Bronze Age axe heads, medieval items and a recreated 1890s Welsh kitchen. Basil Jones’ old grocer’s shop and a saddler’s from 1900 to 1930 are also displayed. Nationally important collections relate to Father Ignatius and Lady Llanover. Schools regularly visit the museum for workshops on local Celts, Romans and Victorian life. The displays show how the town and its people have changed over time. Visitors walk through rooms filled with photographs, tools and household objects. The Roman finds from the fort of Gobannium link the past directly to the site. The museum remains a place where history is both preserved and shared.
