Composition hut of Gustav Mahler

Gustav Mahler’s composing hut stands beside Lake Attersee in Steinbach, Upper Austria. A small wooden cabin, it was built in 1894 for the composer to work in peace. Mahler spent summers there from 1893 to 1896, composing two symphonies and a dozen songs. The hut has three windows and once held a chair, table, stove and piano. After Mahler left, the building served as a washing house, toilet and even a slaughterhouse before falling into neglect. The hut now houses a permanent exhibition opened in 1985. In 2016 the International Gustav Mahler Society renewed the display with six wall panels. These cover Mahler’s life, his years at Attersee, the local landscape and his settings of Des Knaben Wunderhorn. Two panels focus on his second and third symphonies. Photographs, music sheets and original documents are also shown alongside multimedia elements. Visitors find the simple cabin set in a quiet lakeside village. Inside, the exhibition panels line the walls and a piano stands where Mahler once played. Outside, the view across the lake recalls the scenery that inspired his music. The hut remains a modest monument to a composer’s retreat and the works it produced.
