Stadttheater Bremerhaven

The Stadttheater Bremerhaven stands in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. It was founded in 1867 and presents opera, plays and dance. The theatre moved to its present site in 1911, but the building was largely destroyed in the Second World War. A new house was completed in 1952, reusing the surviving Jugendstil façade. The theatre’s history is documented in several publications, including works by Fritz Ernst and Hans-E. Happel. A 1952 festival book marks the reopening after the war. The smaller Bürgerhaus Lehe once served as a temporary home for performances before the rebuilding. Visitors find a modern auditorium inside the 1952 structure. The restored Jugendstil façade remains visible from the street. The Bürgerhaus Lehe now hosts chamber productions. The theatre continues to stage opera, plays and dance in the city centre.
