Remigiusberg

The Remigiusberg is a hill in the North Palatine Uplands of Rheinland-Pfalz, rising 368 metres above sea level and 120 metres above the surrounding terrain. It lies west of the River Glan near the village of Haschbach and forms the centre of the Remigiusland. The hill is linked by roads to nearby villages and to the 562-metre-high Potzberg three kilometres to the east. Access comes from the north via local roads branching off the main routes. The hilltop holds two historic sites worth the journey. The priory church of St. Remigius replaced a castle in 1127 and was built by monks from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Remi in Reims. It served as the burial place for fifteen members of the House of Palatinate-Veldenz. Close by stand the ruins of Michelsburg Castle, built in 1260 and later owned by the Wittelsbach Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. The castle suffered damage in the Thirty Years’ War and the War of the Palatine Succession before being destroyed by French troops in the 1790s. Visitors reach the summit along roads from Haschbach or Rammelsbach. The priory church remains standing, its interior holding the tombs of the Palatinate-Veldenz counts. The Michelsburg ruins offer views across the surrounding countryside and down to the Glan valley. The shallow basin between the two sites marks the old boundary of the monastery grounds. The restored sections of the castle walls show where the chapel once stood. The hilltop is quiet, with only the wind and distant village sounds breaking the stillness.
