Saint Nicholas parish church

The parish church of St Nicholas stands in Oberndorf, a village beside the Salzach river just north of Salzburg city. First recorded in the 12th century, the present building replaced an earlier church destroyed by fire in 1757 and then rebuilt only to suffer repeated flood damage in the late 19th century. In the early 20th century planners chose a safer site for both church and village centre, and Cardinal Katschthaler laid the foundation stone in 1906; the church was consecrated a year later by Weihbischof Kaltner. Beside the old church’s rubble mound now stands the 1937 Silent-Night Chapel, marking the spot where ‘Stille Nacht’ was first sung. Inside, the single-ship nave is roofed with a barrel vault and lit by large round-headed windows set between double pilasters. A five-storey tower rises at the north end, its four bells cast in steel and hung in pairs on two levels. The chancel is vaulted in ribbed cross-grains, and behind the round-arched triumphal arch the high altar of 1829 shows St Nicholas kneeling before the Trinity, painted by Christian Wink in 1775. Side altars carry further works by Wink, Oefele and Jaud, while the pulpit bears figures of the four church fathers carved by Johannes Piger in 1908. The 1982 Stille-Nacht organ, housed in a case designed by Matthäus Schlager, replaced an earlier instrument and was first heard nationally in an ORF broadcast that Christmas Eve. Outside, the west front displays a niche with a late-17th-century statue of St Rupert and bronze door handles by Josef Zenzmaier from 1968. The north and south side portals are framed by projecting gables, and to the east a single-storey sacristy abuts the chancel. The church’s proportions—about 54 metres long and 19 metres wide—echo those of its near-twin in Linz, the parish church of Kleinmünchen, completed by the same architect. The surrounding village, rebuilt on higher ground, keeps the memory of the old church alive through the nearby chapel and the annual Silent-Night concerts held in the church.
