Magenheim Palace

Schloss Magenheim stands above the village of Cleebronn in the Heilbronn district of Baden-Württemberg. It is one of Germany’s best-preserved Hohenstaufen castles, built on a hilltop that once held two medieval fortresses. The lower castle, Niedermagenheim, became the core of today’s Schloss Magenheim after the upper fortress vanished. Archaeologists date the surviving buildings to between 1220 and 1250, though earlier walls may lie beneath them. The castle’s owners, the Lords of Magenheim, surrendered Niedermagenheim to Count Eberhard II of Württemberg in 1367. After passing through several hands as a pawn, it was finally held by the Helmstatt family from 1391. Twelve major renovations have turned the ruins into a fully usable venue while keeping the original ashlar masonry and twin ditches intact. The curtain wall and remnants of the shield wall still frame the site. Visitors walk past the restored great hall and along the curtain wall to the chapel where civil and church weddings take place. The private owners, the von Lamezan family, host concerts and lectures several times a year. Beyond the castle, the Michaelsberg rises behind the vanished upper fortress, offering views across the surrounding vineyards.
