Burg Stahleck

Burg Stahleck stands on a narrow ridge 711 metres above sea level, overlooking the Echaz valley two kilometres north-west of St. Johann-Ohnastetten. The spur rises steeply above the surrounding farmland, giving the site a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. The village church below marks the nearest settlement, while the landscape falls away into wooded slopes. The castle’s name first appears in records from 1254, linked to Konrad von Stahleck, though its builders remain uncertain. Some scholars suggest the Greifenstein family may have held the site, yet the lack of destruction during the 1311–1312 Reichskrieg casts doubt on this claim. Archaeologists uncovered the remains of a stone house during excavations in 2021, adding the only visible structure to the site. The main trace of the former stronghold is a broad, grass-covered ditch that once formed the outer defences. Finds from the dig included medieval pottery, helping to date the occupation of the hilltop. The absence of standing walls means visitors rely on imagination to picture the fortress that once stood here. The site’s isolation and sparse remains make it a quiet place for reflection on the past. Visitors walk a short path from the edge of the woodland to the flat summit where the castle once stood. The surrounding beech and oak trees frame views across the valley to distant ridges. The quiet hum of insects replaces the noise of the medieval garrison, while walkers pass by without stopping. On clear days the silhouette of the Swabian Alb’s central peaks appears on the horizon. The site offers no museum or information boards, only the earthworks and a sense of the hill’s strategic importance.
