Pfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt, Niederleis

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption stands at the eastern edge of Niederleis village, beside the Niederleiser Bach stream in Mistelbach district. Built in the early 19th century after a late-Gothic predecessor burned down in 1808, it replaced an earlier place of worship first recorded as a parish in 1560. The simple white façade rises behind a paved square laid out in 2013, its low tower capped by a small pyramid roof. Inside, the church belongs to the Classical style with a three-bay nave covered by flat vaults and sturdy wall piers. A wooden gallery painted to resemble marble spans the west end. The raised choir at the east end repeats the vaulting pattern, giving the interior a calm symmetry. The furnishings, carved and painted between 1800 and 1850, include a reworked Baroque high altar, a set of carved reliefs on the pulpit, and Stations of the Cross painted by W. Jackl in the 19th century. Among the treasures kept here is a late-Gothic monstrance of 1506, its figures of the Virgin and Child, Saint Peter and Saint John the Baptist finely chased in silver. A bell cast in 1646 by Leonhard Loew still rings from the tower, and the 1850 organ by Josef Loyp provides music for Sunday Mass. The church’s restrained Classical lines and carefully preserved furnishings offer a quiet space for reflection on more than eight centuries of parish life in Niederleis.
