St Mary the Virgin's Church, Ayston

St Mary the Virgin’s Church stands in the quiet village of Ayston, Rutland, in the East Midlands. Built of rubble stone with tiled roofs, it is a small Anglican church with a nave, north and south aisles, a chancel, a south porch and a west tower. The oldest parts date from the 12th century, though most of what survives comes from the 13th and 14th centuries. The tower was added in the 14th century with paired bell openings and an embattled parapet. By the early 21st century the congregation had fallen so low that regular services ended in 2012. The church was declared redundant and placed in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust in 2014. The building shows clear traces of each century from the 12th to the 16th. The north aisle and arcade belong to the 13th century, while the south aisle was widened in the 14th. In the 15th century the chancel was rebuilt and new windows inserted. Inside, the arcades rest on circular piers, with round-headed arches on the north side and pointed arches on the south. The nave still holds 18th-century box pews and a font on a pedestal. Wall paintings survive, including a royal coat of arms over the chancel arch and floral patterns on the north wall. Visitors step into a space that feels both ancient and orderly. The worn effigies of a knight and lady lie in the north aisle, and one window in the south aisle contains fragments of 15th-century stained glass. The tower contains four bells, the oldest dating from about 1365. A small single-manual organ, made around 1890 by W. R. Andrew, stands near the west end. The church’s plain stone walls and simple furnishings let the medieval craftsmanship speak for itself.
