Flat Holm

Flat Holm is a small island in the Bristol Channel about six kilometres from Lavernock Point. It lies at the southern edge of Wales and is the country’s most southerly point. The island is flat and low-lying, with limestone cliffs along parts of the shore. It has no trees and is covered mainly by maritime grassland. The island’s geology includes Carboniferous limestone and Triassic red marl, with caves on the western and north-eastern sides. These caves were once used by smugglers to hide goods brought ashore under cover of darkness. The island has a long history of human activity. Bronze Age people left traces around the farmhouse and West Beach, including a bronze axe head found in 1988. In the 5th and 6th centuries Saint Cadoc lived here as a hermit for seven years. In 1835 the Bristol Channel Mission was founded on the island, later becoming the Mission to Seafarers. In 1896 a cholera isolation hospital was built to serve Cardiff docks. Guglielmo Marconi sent the first wireless signals over open sea from Flat Holm to Lavernock in 1897. Military history is visible in the 19th-century gun emplacements built to defend the approaches to Bristol and Cardiff. Visitors walk along grassy paths that lead past the farmhouse and the old lighthouse. The limestone shoreline shows wave-cut platforms with ripple marks and fossils. The island supports large colonies of lesser black-backed gulls, herring gulls and great black-backed gulls. Slow worms with unusual blue markings can be spotted among the rocks. The farmhouse remains a central landmark, and the remains of a medieval building suggest earlier religious use. The island’s quiet grasslands and cliffs offer views across the channel to both the Welsh and English coasts.
