Am brennten Buck Hillfort

The Ringwall Am brennten Buck is an early historic hilltop fortification on a 697-metre hill south of the ruins of Grüneck. It stands on land belonging to Obereggenen, now a district of Schliengen in the Lörrach district of Baden-Württemberg. Only low ramparts and a surrounding ditch remain of the original structure. The main rampart measured sixty-three metres long and twenty-seven metres wide. A ditch up to fifteen metres wide once ran around the outside.
Historians Werner Meyer and Hans Trenkle have written about the site in regional castle studies. Meyer’s 1981 lexicon of castles in the Regio includes an entry for the Ringwall Am brennten Buck. Trenkle’s 1930 local history of Obereggenen and Sitzenkirch describes the earthworks in detail. A relief map in the Baden-Württemberg Geoportal shows the surviving contours.
Visitors walk a quiet forest path to the hilltop clearing. The low grassy ramparts still trace the outline of the old fort. The wider ditch is visible on the northern side. From the crest there are views across the surrounding farmland and vineyards. The site is peaceful, with only the sound of wind in the trees.
