The Rauer Knöll is a rugged mountain rising to 2,278 metres in the Karwendel range of the Austrian Alps. It stands in the south-eastern spur of the range, where it towers above the Stallental valley to the south and the Falzthurntal valley to the north. The peak’s steep flanks and sharp ridges give it a wild, uncompromising presence among its neighbours.
Climbers rate the Rauer Knöll as a serious ascent, with routes graded up to UIAA III on the north-east ridge. The usual way follows the Lunstsattel col from the Lamsenjoch hut, or tackles the west flank where scrambling reaches UIAA II. These difficulties keep the mountain quiet compared with busier peaks nearby.
From the summit visitors look across a sea of high limestone ridges and deep green valleys. To the north-east the Lunstkopf blocks the view, while the Schafjöchl ridge falls away to the south-west. The air is thin, the silence complete, and only the occasional chamois disturbs the stillness.
