Selkirk War Memorial
The Selkirk War Memorial stands in the Scottish Borders town of Selkirk. It occupies a prominent position where The Valley meets Ettrick Terrace. Designed by Robert Lorimer, the monument was completed in 1922. The structure is enclosed by a drystone wall with baroque balustrades built into the slope. A central feature rises on the second level, reached by a small flight of steps. The memorial honours Selkirk’s citizens who died in the First World War. A bronze figure of Victory, holding a wreath and sword, stands in a round-headed niche above a square pedestal. A narrowing octagonal shaft tops the pedestal with a Maltese cross. Bronze plaques on the lower wall list the names of the fallen from the Great War. A later plaque records those lost from Selkirk in the Second World War. Visitors approach across the grassed terrace and climb a few steps to the upper level. The bronze panels catch the light against the stone backdrop. The Victory statue overlooks the town and the surrounding hills. The setting combines open sky with the solid masonry of the memorial. The contrast between the curved walls and the straight cross gives the scene a quiet dignity.
