Stellerburg

The Stellerburg is an early medieval ring-wall fortification in Weddingstedt, Dithmarschen. It stands on an island-like rise between the Geest uplands and the Lundener Nehrung, close to an old long-distance trade route. Built by Saxons before Charlemagne’s conquest, the site was meant to block Viking raids moving south. To the east lay vast moors; to the west stretched unprotected, often flooded marshland that made attack difficult. Excavations by Kiel’s Museum für vorgeschichtliche Altertümer in 1932–33 uncovered a timber causeway inside the rampart and traces of twenty wooden houses. Few small finds suggest the stronghold was used only briefly. The earth-and-timber wall still rises four to six metres above the surrounding ground, giving a clear sense of its former scale. Local legend, recorded by Karl Müllenhoff after Neocorus, tells how Dithmarschen farmers dressed in green boughs on Whitsun to trick the castle guards. Once inside, they killed the garrison and destroyed the fortress. A betrayed count was said to have been found in a cellar and his wife drowned in a well now called Doortjensood. The tale explains why, it is claimed, no noble has ever been allowed to live in Dithmarschen since.
