City of London School

City of London School stands beside the Thames, next to the Millennium Bridge and opposite Tate Modern. It is a private day school for boys aged eleven to eighteen. The school occupies a modern site on Queen Victoria Street, reached by walking from St Paul’s Cathedral along the riverside path. The school traces its origins to a bequest made in 1442 by John Carpenter, town clerk of London. In 1834 Parliament founded the school on Honey Lane Market, with Warren Stormes Hale as its guiding figure. Among its most famous former pupils are Prime Minister H. H. Asquith, Nobel laureates Frederick Gowland Hopkins and Peter Higgs, and actor Daniel Radcliffe. Visitors see a large school building with classrooms and science laboratories. The riverside site offers views across the Thames to Tate Modern and beyond. The Millennium Bridge, a short walk away, connects the school to the South Bank. Inside, the school’s library holds books connected to its long history.
