Dirleton Castle

Dirleton Castle stands on a rocky outcrop in the village of Dirleton, East Lothian, about three kilometres west of North Berwick and thirty-one kilometres east of Edinburgh. Built in the 13th century by John De Vaux, it was later held by the Haliburton and Ruthven families before falling into ruin by the late 17th century. The castle once guarded the coastal route from England to Edinburgh through North Berwick, a strategic position during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Its surviving ruins include a 13th-century keep and a 16th-century house added by the Ruthvens, while earlier additions by the Haliburtons survive only at basement level. The castle’s gardens, enclosed by high walls, contain a 16th-century doocot and date largely from the 20th century. The castle’s history reflects Scotland’s turbulent past. It was besieged by English forces under Antony Bek in 1298 and changed hands repeatedly during the Wars of Scottish Independence. The Haliburtons repaired and expanded it in the 14th and 15th centuries, adding a large hall and tower house. The Ruthvens, who acquired Dirleton in 1505, played a key role in the murder of Mary, Queen of Scots’ secretary David Riccio and later seized King James VI in the Raid of Ruthven. Their involvement in plots against the crown led to the castle’s forfeiture in 1600. Visitors today see the remains of the keep and the Ruthvens’ 16th-century house, with only the lower walls of the Haliburtons’ hall and tower house still standing. The gardens, enclosed by stone walls, offer a peaceful contrast to the ruins and include a restored doocot. The site commands views over the rich agricultural lands of the Dirleton barony and the coastal approach to Edinburgh. The castle’s strategic position and layered history make it a place where Scotland’s medieval and early modern past can still be traced.
