St Wenefrede's Church, Bickley

St Wenefrede’s Church stands in the village of Bickley in rural Cheshire. The building is a Grade II listed Anglican parish church designed by the Chester firm of Douglas and Fordham in 1892 for the 4th Marquess of Cholmondeley. It occupies a quiet lane surrounded by farmland and mature trees. The church’s sandstone walls and green slate roof with terracotta tiles give it a solid, traditional appearance. A low west tower with an octagonal spire rises above the south porch, marking the entrance. Inside, the nave has a hammerbeam roof and narrow north aisle, while the chancel leads to two vestries. The church is worth visiting for its well-preserved late-19th-century architecture and fine interior details. The tower’s two-stage design includes a west window and bell-openings above, while inside the hammerbeam roof carries painted texts on its beams. The pulpit and organ case also bear inscribed texts, adding to the building’s character. Two stained glass windows by J. E. Nuttgens fill the space with coloured light. As an active parish church it remains in regular use, giving the site a living presence. Visitors find a calm interior with clear lines and warm materials. The nave’s three bays lead to the chancel, where the roof’s hammerbeam trusses are plainly visible. The north passage-aisle runs beside the nave, lit by clear windows. The south porch shelters the main door beneath the tower, which has a simple west window and louvred bell-openings. Outside, the churchyard holds a few gravestones under the shade of surrounding trees. The building’s quiet setting and modest scale make it easy to appreciate its craftsmanship.
