Loch Naver

Loch Naver lies in the Farr parish in Sutherland, Highland, following the B873 road. The loch stretches nearly ten kilometres from east to west, fed by rivers and burns that wind through the surrounding hills. Its narrow shape—between 200 and 600 metres wide—gives it a long, slender appearance on the map. The River Mudale and River Vagastie flow into its western end, while the River Naver carries water away to the east. Nearby settlements include Kilbreck, Redhackaistelll and Dailmallhart, with Alltnaharra and Achanaes close by. The loch is widely recognised as one of the top places in the country for trout fishing. Anglers come to cast lines in both Loch Naver and the River Naver, drawn by the clear waters and healthy fish stocks. The Stathnaver area, which includes the loch, is often singled out for its excellent fishing conditions. Visitors looking to stay near the water can choose between a caravan park on the loch shore or lodges in Alltnaharra and Syre. Paths lead along the loch’s edge, offering views over the water and into the surrounding countryside. The hills around Loch Naver rise gently, with burns tumbling down to meet the loch at several points. The landscape is quiet, with few buildings apart from the scattered crofts and lodges. On calm days the water reflects the sky, while breezes stir the surface and carry the scent of heather from the moors.
