Pfarrkirche Modriach

The parish church of Modriach stands in the small village of Modriach, part of the market town of Edelschrott in Styria. It is dedicated to Saint Vitus and dates back to the mid-13th century. The church belonged to the parish of Pack until 1786, when it became independent. The building has seen several changes over the centuries. A new church was constructed in 1716, and after a fire in 1832 the roof was replaced. The interior was restored in 1964. The church is surrounded by a stone wall and features a four-storey tower with a pointed spire on the western side. Inside, the church has a four-bay nave with a semi-circular apse and a ribbed vault supported by sturdy wall pillars. The Baroque high altar, dating from around 1730–40, holds a painting by Johann Veit Hauck showing the martyrdom of Saint Vitus. Other notable furnishings include the Leonhard altar from 1711, a crucifix altar from the late 18th century, and a small organ built in 1704. Several Baroque statues, including one of Saint Florian, add to the church’s interior.
