Burg Neuenburg (Blumberg)

The Burg Neuenburg once stood high above the Gauchach gorge in the Black Forest, near Blumberg. First mentioned in 1323, it belonged to local nobles before passing through several families. Albrecht von Blumberg sold it in 1409, and later owners included Heinrich von Almshofen and the Schellenberg line. In 1525, during the Peasant War, the castle was set alight and rebuilt with timber framing over its thick stone walls. By 1708, after the death of Johann Franz Berthold von Schellenberg, the buildings stood empty and decayed.

The castle’s final years saw the Fürstenberg lords reclaim the estate in 1742. A century later, in 1789, the timber structure was pulled down for safety, and the remaining ground-floor walls collapsed soon after. Today no traces of the walls remain, though records from the 19th century describe its layout. Historians such as Franz Xaver Kraus and Roland Weis have documented its story in regional studies.

Visitors walk through quiet woodland to the former site, where only the shape of the spur hints at the castle’s position. The gorge below offers steep paths and views over the surrounding valleys. The area remains a peaceful spot for short hikes, with little to mark the vanished fortress except the memory of its owners and the land it once occupied.
