Cnwc Round Cairns

Cnwc Round is a round cairn in Pembrokeshire, a low grassy mound built at the end of the Stone Age and start of the Bronze Age. It stands on open moorland near Maenclochog, marked by a simple stone heap on the Ordnance Survey grid. The builders placed it where the land rises gently toward the west. Its purpose was probably part of burial rites and religious ceremonies for the dead. Cadw recognises it as an ancient monument with the unique SAM number PE343. The same prehistoric people who raised Cnwc Round also built chambered tombs, burial mounds, stone circles and hill forts across the region. These sites form a network of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains in Pembrokeshire. The cairn sits among rough grazing land, with few trees and wide views over rolling hills. Its simplicity contrasts with the more elaborate ring cairns nearby. Visitors walk a farm track to reach the cairn, then follow a faint path up the slope. The mound is small and unexcavated, so the stones remain where they were placed thousands of years ago. From the top there are distant views of the Preseli Hills and the coast. The quiet setting makes it easy to imagine the ceremonies held here long before written records began.
