Lady Leng Memorial Chapel, Vicarsford Cemetery

Lady Leng Memorial Chapel stands in Leuchars, Fife, on the edge of Vicarsford Cemetery. The chapel was built between 1895 and 1897 to designs by Thomas Martin Cappon. Historic Environment Scotland calls it a fine and rare example of a small church type. It was commissioned by politician John Leng as a memorial to his wife, Lady Emily Leng. The building draws inspiration from the Saint-Chapelle in Paris. The chapel is now Category A listed. Vicarsford Cemetery beside it is Category B listed. The chapel is one of the few non-denominational chapels in Scotland. Historic Environment Scotland recognises its architectural importance. The Saint-Chapelle’s influence appears in its stained glass and slender columns. John Leng chose the site for its quiet setting among the cemetery grounds. The chapel’s design reflects the 19th-century taste for elaborate memorials. Its Category A status places it among Scotland’s most significant historic buildings. Inside, the chapel has a single nave with a small chancel. Tall, narrow windows allow light to fall on the memorial’s details. The stained glass shows delicate patterns and soft colours. The slender columns rise to a ribbed vault. Outside, the cemetery’s Category B listed walls and gatepiers frame views of the surrounding countryside. The whole place offers a peaceful space for quiet reflection.
