St. Cyprian (Bonn)
St Cyprian is the parish church of the Old Catholic congregation in Bonn. It stands on Adenauerallee in the Südstadt district, close to the Rhine. The building is a modern single-space church made of reinforced concrete faced with brick. Tall coloured glass windows are divided by concrete mullions, and the main door is a bronze work by Viktor Eichler. The church was designed by Otto Firle and consecrated in 1957. Its interior centres on an altar placed against the east wall before the largest window. A tower above the main entrance frames the footpath and carries the bells. Inside, the furnishings include a triptych by Jochen Winde, a Pietà by Viktor Eichler, and a tabernacle by Matthias Furtmair. The organ case, by Jochen Winde, reveals the main and swell divisions and a horizontal chamade pipe. The church’s history goes back to 1877, when the community used the Namen-Jesu-Kirche. After wartime destruction in 1944, the present building was rebuilt and rededicated. A 1994 renovation turned the seating to face the new altar and moved the organ to the former sanctuary. The tower contains a five-bell peal, one bell surviving from the 1934 predecessor.
