St Mary and All Saints' Church, Kidderminster

St Mary and All Saints’ Church stands in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, as a Grade I listed Major Parish Church of the Church of England. Its foundations date back to the Domesday Book of 1086, with the present building mostly dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The church played a notable role during the English Civil War when vicar George Dance agreed to fund a preacher, leading to Richard Baxter becoming minister in 1641. Architectural changes in the 19th century included a new entrance beneath the tower and the removal of western galleries. Later additions include the Whittall Chapel by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1921–1922 and interior reordering by Ronald Sims in 1988–1990. The tower houses a ring of twelve bells, including a flat sixth bell added in 2003, with the tenor bell weighing 2,856 pounds. The bells underwent restoration after storm damage in 1881, with new chimes introduced by the Freemasons. The clock, originally made in 1828, was replaced in 1856 by a new mechanism designed to strike the quarters. Visitors find a spacious interior with oak pews, a row of pillars dividing the southern aisle from the chancel, and a painted reredos by Mr Margetts of Oxford. The tower’s restored floors and clock chamber reflect its 19th-century repairs, while the Whittall Chapel adds a later architectural highlight. The organ and bells remain in regular use, with the carillon chimes playing every third hour. The church’s civic role is reflected in its prominence within the community and its connections to local churches.
