St Winwaloe Church

St Winwaloe’s Church stands in the quiet hamlet of Poundstock in north Cornwall. The building is a Grade I listed parish church of the Church of England, surrounded by low stone walls and farmland. Its nave, aisle, chancel and west tower belong to the late 15th century, while the transept dates from the 13th. The church was rededicated to St Winwaloe in the 1970s after earlier being known as St Neot. In 1896 George Fellowes Prynne carried out a restoration that shaped the church as it appears today. The church holds details worth travelling to see. A Gothic font, probably from the 13th century, stands near the entrance. The Jacobean pulpit remains in daily use for services. Three faded wall paintings on the north wall depict the Tree of Deadly Sins, a Warning to Sabbath-breakers and the Weighing of Souls. A single-manual pipe organ survives, though an electric organ now provides music during worship. Inside, the nave and chancel lead the eye to the tower above the west door. The transept chapel offers a quieter space for reflection. The surrounding churchyard contains simple headstones and a few mature yews. Beyond the walls, lanes wind through rolling fields towards the sea.
