St. Christoph

St. Christoph is a modern Roman Catholic parish church in Graz’s seventh district, Liebenau. It stands near the former Steyr-Daimler-Puch works, where thousands of workers lived after the factory moved to Thondorf. The church was built between 1962 and 1964 to designs by architect Robert Kramreiter. It was consecrated on 30 August 1964 to Saint Christopher, the patron of travellers. The choice of saint reflected the parish’s close link to the car plant across the road. The building deliberately contrasts with the heavy industrial sheds around it. When first proposed, the design met strong local opposition. A spiral ramp now links the main worship space to a separate baptismal chapel. A tall brick campanile holds the bells above the entrance. Inside, Ulf Mayer carved the crucifix, while Karl Huber, a Graz goldsmith, made the tabernacle, lights and altar cross. Heinrich Bliemegger, a woodcarver from Liebenau, sculpted the Madonna. Visitors enter through the shadow of the brick tower and find a single, uncluttered nave. The curved ramp rises gently to the baptistery, its walls plain white plaster. The tabernacle hangs like a lantern above the altar, catching the light from modern fittings. The Madonna stands to one side, her robes softly modelled. Outside, the churchyard borders open fields where the old factory once stood.
