Hörselbergmuseum

The Hörselbergmuseum stands in Schönau, a district of Wutha-Farnroda in Thüringen. It occupies a carefully preserved ensemble of buildings: a church, an old schoolhouse, a parsonage courtyard with its house, stable, granary and bakehouse. The stable serves as the museum’s main building, where visitors explore exhibits on the Hörsel mountains. The displays explain the mountains’ geology and fossils, their varied wildlife and rare orchids, and the legends that surround them. They also trace the history of the Hörselberghaus mountain hut. Special sections recall the links to Richard Wagner, composer of Tannhäuser, and to Ludwig Bechstein, the fairy-tale collector. A reconstructed old bakery shows traditional baking tools and shop fittings. Upstairs, under the roof, the Galerie hosts temporary exhibitions. The museum’s garden offers quiet benches and views across the valley. Visitors leave with a sense of the Hörsel mountains’ natural and cultural story.
