Ober- und Unterburg Neibsheim

The Ober- and Unterburg Neibsheim are the remains of two castles near the village of Neibsheim in Bretten. The Oberburg stood on a hill north of the village, while the Unterburg, also called the water castle, was built beside the village stream. Both were built by the Lords of Neibsheim in the 14th century. The Oberburg was first mentioned in 1397 but has left no visible traces today. The Unterburg was later owned by Eitel Schelm von Bergen and burned down in 1490. Its ruins were removed in 1840, so nothing remains of either castle now. Archaeologists have found fragments of the Oberburg’s foundations during digs in Neibsheim. These discoveries help piece together the history of the site. The surrounding fields and stream still carry the names that once marked the castles’ locations.
