River Arrow
The River Arrow rises in the Welsh Marches near Gwaunceste Hill in Powys and flows south-east into Herefordshire. It passes through villages such as Newchurch and Michaelchurch-on-Arrow before marking a short stretch of the England–Wales border. The river continues through Kington, where it is joined by the Honey Lake Brook and Back Brook, then winds east past Lyonshall, Staunton-on-Arrow and Pembridge. After skirting Arrow Green and Ivington, it reaches Broadward and finally meets the River Lugg south of Leominster at Stoke Prior. The Arrow Valley Trail runs for 56 kilometres beside the river, giving walkers a way to follow its entire course from source to confluence. The route passes meadows, woodlands and farmland, offering views of traditional Herefordshire countryside. Along the way it crosses the Gilwern Brook and passes quiet hamlets like Monkland and Ivington Green. The trail links historic villages where old bridges and packhorse routes still stand. Visitors walking the Arrow Valley Trail find gentle riverside paths and open fields bordered by hedgerows. The river itself is shallow and clear in places, with occasional stepping stones and small weirs. Villages along the route have old coaching inns and timber-framed houses, while the surrounding hills provide distant views of the Black Mountains. The trail is quiet enough for birdwatching, with sightings of herons, kingfishers and occasional otters.
