St Mary's Church, Hardmead

St Mary’s Church stands in the quiet Buckinghamshire village of Hardmead. Built of stone, it has a low lead-roofed nave with aisles and a clerestory, a tiled chancel, a south porch, and a three-stage west tower topped by a battlemented parapet. The tower carries traceried bell-openings and lacks buttresses, while the nave parapets are also battlemented and the aisle parapets plain. The church once served a vanished medieval village and now belongs to the Friends of Friendless Churches, who maintain it as a rare Grade I listed building. Its history is written in every stone. The tower’s lower stages date from the 13th century, the chancel from the following century, and the clerestory and upper tower stage were added in the 15th. Inside, a 14th-century double arcade divides the nave from its aisles. The 15th-century font is richly carved with tracery, and the bench ends carry similar patterns. The Catesby family are remembered by a 1636 wall monument and a 1556 brass, while the Shedden family’s memorials include a relief of the yacht Nancy Dawson lost on Franklin’s search. Visitors step into a calm space of simple dignity. The east window and chancel windows hold Decorated tracery, and the north aisle holds the Catesby monuments. The organ, built around 1837 by J. W. Walker, still stands restored, and three bells hang silent in the tower, their oldest cast about 1399. Occasional services recall the church’s past life, but today it offers a quiet place to stand among centuries of stone and wood.
