Hochhäderich

The Hochhäderich stands in the Allgäuer Alps, a western outpost of the Hochgratkette that also marks the border between Germany and Austria. It rises just over 1,500 metres above sea level and belongs to the Nagelfluhkette nature park. The mountain’s name appears in older maps as Hochhädrich, reflecting the local pronunciation without the extra vowel. Records from 1471 already called it Harderich, hinting at an older term for scrub or pasture land rather than a personal surname. The summit is the finish of a winter ski-lift that starts from the car park below. In summer the same lift base serves walkers who want to reach the top without a long climb. The Hochhäderich is worth the journey because it is the easiest of the Hochgratkette peaks to reach on foot. A broad, well-trodden path leads straight from the lift station to the summit in about an hour. From there the view stretches across the Allgäu countryside and into the Austrian Alps. The route is straightforward enough for families and casual hikers, yet it still offers the alpine scenery that draws mountaineers to the range. The mountain’s gentle slopes contrast with the steeper ridges nearby, making it a reliable choice when weather turns changeable. On arrival visitors find a small summit cross and a broad, grassy ridge that can hold dozens of walkers at once. The lift station below provides a sheltered spot to rest before or after the climb. Those who arrive by ski-lift in winter glide almost to the top, while summer walkers follow a clear trail marked with red-and-white stripes. The path continues along the Hochgratkette to the Falkenköpfe for those who want a longer day out. In every season the Hochhäderich gives a quiet, open view of the surrounding peaks without the crowds of higher summits.
